AI-generated exam paper submissions evade detection at UK university

In a test of the University of Reading's examination system in the UK, submissions created by artificial intelligence (AI) remained virtually unnoticed, and the grades obtained by these fake answers were often higher than those of actual students. The results are published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE on June 26 by Peter Scarfe and colleagues from the University of Reading.

Concerns about students utilising AI tools like ChatGPT to cheat by turning in work that was generated by the programme as their own have arisen as these programmes have become more sophisticated and common.

Scarfe and colleagues used the AI chatbot GPT-4 to create responses that were 100% written by the AI chatbot GPT-4. These responses were then submitted to the University of Reading's School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences assessment system on behalf of 33 fake students in order to gain a better understanding of this issue. No one who graded exams knew about the study.

The researchers found that 94% of their AI submissions went undetected. When compared to actual student responses, the fake responses earned higher grades overall. AI submissions outperformed a randomly chosen group of identical real student submissions in 83.4% of cases, with the AI submissions receiving higher scores.
